Centering Indigenous knowledge in bird monitoring
Fort Severn, Ontario, is rich in bird diversity, with many species at risk of extinction and several cultural keystone species to the Indigenous peoples of the area. The region is facing rapid environment changes due to climate change and growing interest in mineral extraction.
We are supporting guardians in Fort Severn with Western approaches to achieve community goals of monitoring biodiversity. We helped set up acoustic recording units throughout spring 2024 to better understand the diversity of birds at culturally significant sites.
Analyzing recordings, we have documented a variety of species, including spring migrants crucial for food and cultural practices, and key ecosystem indicator species. Additionally, we aim to provide the community with a better understanding of the migratory patterns of Canada geese through the area. This collaboration hopes to create solutions rooted in the needs of the land and its people, and center Indigenous knowledge in conservation.
