Grouping Species at Risk to inform management

Limited resources are a major challenge in implementing biodiversity conservation solutions.

It is often too expensive to implement all recovery actions for every species at risk, necessitating strategic planning around where time and money are spent.

In collaboration with the Canadian Wildlife Service and Environment and Climate Change Canada, we are grouping listed species at risk in Canada to inform resource allocation, such as funding and personnel. We are grouping them based on commonalities like threats, actions, spatial overlap with other species at risk, and habitat protection. Grouping these species will allow for prioritization analyses to select actions that benefit multiple species at risk for the lowest cost, with the aim of maximizing resources, effort, and species recovery.

This "species streaming model" will be implemented within Environment and Climate Change, with the goal of improving the way wildlife is managed by the federal government.
